Selfcare Sunday: Body Oiling

One of my favorite practices in the winter months that boosts immunity, relieves stress, and soothes my skin is body oiling. This ancient technique, rooted in Ayurvedic healing and mentioned in many historical texts and widely known in the herbal community, combines nourishment and ritual to promote relaxation, hydration, and overall health.

Body oiling is the practice of massaging plant-based oils into the skin to nourish, protect, and support overall wellness. Body oiling provides deep hydration while delivering the medicinal properties of herbs and botanical extracts directly through the skin. Unlike lotions, which are water-based and evaporate quickly, oils create a lasting barrier that locks in moisture and enhances the skin’s ability to absorb nutrients.

Nervous System and Immune Support

Your skin, the body’s largest organ, is rich in nerve endings and immune cells. When hydrated with oil, it soothes the nervous system, reducing tension and promoting relaxation. How to Practice Body Oiling

Preparation - After a bath or shower, lay a towel on your bed or floor. Keep your oil nearby for easy access.

The Massage - Start with your feet, using circular motions with firm pressure. Gradually work upward: ankles, calves, knees, thighs, hips, abdomen, lower back, chest, arms, and neck. Take slow, deep breaths, staying present with the sensations in your body. You can also massage your face, focusing on areas like the jaw and temples.

Finishing Touches - After oiling, put on warm socks and comfortable clothing. Rest for a few minutes to fully relax and enjoy the nourishing effects. You can choose to leave the oil on your skin to continue absorbing its benefits.
If time is tight, focus on key areas like your feet, hands, or ears. Even brief sessions can have a rejuvenating impact.
